When Are Wisdom Teeth a Problem?
Expert Extractions with Minimal Discomfort
Wisdom teeth — the third molars located at the very back of the mouth — typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. For many people, the jaw simply does not have enough room to accommodate these late-arriving teeth properly. When there is insufficient space, wisdom teeth may become impacted, meaning they are trapped beneath the gumline or angled in a direction that causes them to press against neighbouring teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth are a leading cause of dental pain, infection, and damage to adjacent molars.
Even when wisdom teeth do erupt partially, the position at the back of the mouth makes them extremely difficult to clean effectively. This creates a high-risk environment for decay and gum disease that can spread to otherwise healthy teeth. At Dentistry on Norfolk South, Dr. Khurana performs thorough evaluations using digital X-rays and 3D imaging to assess the position of your wisdom teeth and determine the safest, most appropriate course of action. When removal is recommended, we use precise surgical technique and effective anesthesia to ensure a comfortable experience and a smooth recovery.
Key Benefits
- Persistent pain or pressure at the back of the jaw, often radiating toward the ear
- Swelling, redness, or tenderness in the gum tissue behind the last molar
- Difficulty opening the mouth fully or a feeling of stiffness in the jaw
- Recurrent infection (pericoronitis) around a partially erupted wisdom tooth
- Crowding of the front teeth as wisdom teeth push against adjacent molars
Why Choose This Treatment
The Advantages
Immediate Pain Relief
Removing a problematic wisdom tooth eliminates the source of pressure, infection, and pain, providing rapid and lasting relief from the discomfort that impacted or infected wisdom teeth cause.
Protects Neighbouring Teeth
Impacted wisdom teeth exert pressure on the adjacent second molars and can cause decay, bone loss, or root damage. Early removal protects your other teeth from these complications.
Prevents Infection
Partially erupted wisdom teeth create a pocket where bacteria accumulate and cause recurrent infections. Removal eliminates this risk entirely, improving your overall oral and systemic health.
Faster Recovery When Young
Wisdom tooth roots are less fully formed in younger patients, making extraction easier and recovery faster. Early evaluation and timely removal leads to significantly smoother outcomes than waiting until problems escalate.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
During your consultation, Dr. Khurana will assess your individual needs and determine if this treatment is the right fit for you.
Schedule a Consultation- Impacted wisdom teeth that are fully or partially trapped beneath the gumline and are causing pain, pressure, or pushing against neighbouring teeth
- Wisdom teeth that have partially erupted and are prone to recurrent infection (pericoronitis) due to difficulty cleaning the surrounding tissue

- Patients planning orthodontic treatment where wisdom teeth may interfere with alignment or cause crowding after braces are removed
What to Expect
The Treatment Process
X-rays & Consultation
Dr. Khurana takes digital X-rays or a cone beam CT scan to assess the exact position, angulation, and root development of your wisdom teeth. We discuss the findings, explain your options, and provide a clear treatment plan and timeline.
Pre-Treatment Preparation
We review your medical history, discuss anesthesia options (local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, or IV sedation for suitable candidates), and provide detailed pre-operative instructions. Any active infection may be treated with antibiotics prior to the extraction.
Extraction
Under comfortable anesthesia, Dr. Khurana gently removes the wisdom tooth using precise surgical technique. For impacted teeth, a small incision may be made in the gum and the tooth may be divided into sections for easier, less traumatic removal. The site is sutured as needed.
Recovery & Aftercare
We provide detailed post-operative instructions and all necessary prescriptions before you leave. Most patients recover fully within 3–7 days. We schedule a follow-up appointment to check healing and remove sutures if required. Our team is available to answer any questions during your recovery.
